Nature Exploration, Meteor Showers At Crossroads

Join a naturalist at Crossroads at Big Creek to explore nature through artistic and creative activities on Aug. 4, 10 am. Families get make-and-take crafts that are nature inspired. This week’s program features local puppeteer Nancy Hawkins, who will share the story The Lion and the Mouse.

The Bear Clan Singers and Dancers, a renowned family of Ho-Chunk performers, will share a small part of their nation’s history through a performance Aug. 4, 6:30 pm. Afterward, head to the Council Ring to socialize around the campfire, tell stories and make s’mores. Bench seating is available, but attendees may take a blanket or camp chair.

Help with land-restoration efforts Aug. 5 and 12, both at 9 am. Wear clothing and footwear that can get dirty and wet, and take a water bottle. Instruction, equipment, gloves, cookies and lemonade will be provided.

Join a naturalist for free Nature Mornings programs at 10 am on three days in a row. On Aug. 7, participants will go on an insect safari, for which hand lenses and collection sets will be provided. The life cycle of butterflies is the topic of the Aug. 8 session, and participants will look at fossils and learn about the hard-shelled creatures that lived in ancient seas on Aug. 9.

The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society will hold its August meeting at the Stonecipher Astronomy Center, 2200 Utah St. in Sturgeon Bay, on Aug. 8, 7 pm. Community members are invited to learn about meteors, and refreshments will follow the program. If the skies are clear, night-sky viewing will be open to the public.

If you like to garden and want to give native pollinators a helping hand, meet at Crossroads on Aug. 10, 8:30 am, to work on restoring the Pollinator Garden. Instruction, equipment and coffee will be provided.

Then break out the bug nets and boots on Aug. 11, 6:30 pm, to join a naturalist for strolling, collecting bugs, and searching for frogs, crayfish and more. Dress for stream walks and the weather.

And finally, members of the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society are hosting a Perseids Party on Aug. 11 and 12, 8:30 pm. Take blankets, lawn chairs, beverages and snacks to settle in and enjoy the meteor shower. Society members will be on hand with green lasers to point out constellations. Meet at the Stonecipher Astronomy Center, 2200 Utah St. in Sturgeon Bay.
